NCAA Swimming Qualifying Standards: D1, D2, and D3 Explained

A cut, B cut, QS, Qualifying, Provisional — the terminology shifts depending on which NCAA division you're looking at, and in Division I's case, from year to year. Here's what each one actually means.
Division I
Starting in 2026, D1 replaced the old A/B system for individual events with a single qualifying standard (QS) per event. The rank behind that number isn't fixed — it's been recalculated each year so far:
- 2026: a 3-year average of the 72nd-best time nationally, same rank for men and women.
- 2027: gender-specific and based on the prior season alone — 64th-best time for men, 88th-best for women.
Where that 2026 line sat is still useful context: the old A cut was roughly the 8th-best time nationally (a handful of qualifiers per event), the old B cut roughly the 125th (hundreds of qualifiers). The new QS landing near 70th-90th put it deliberately in between.
The headline change is how you use that standard. Win your conference championship while swimming under the QS, and you're in automatically — no waiting on national rankings. That shortcut only applies to individual events. Hit the QS at any other point in the season without winning your conference, and you're ranked and selected event-by-event with everyone else, filled evenly across events until the meet caps out (235 men, 281 women).
The reason the QS wasn't set as loose as the old B cut: at that level, most conference champions would clear it automatically, and the "win and you're in" rule would stop meaning anything.
Relays didn't change. They still run the old two-tier system, now called Qualifying (auto-in) and Provisional (fills remaining spots), with no conference-champion shortcut. Relay bids also belong to the school, not the four swimmers who earned the time — a team can swim anyone in the final.
Division II
D2 kept the classic two-tier system for individual events. A cut is an automatic invite; B cut fills whatever room is left once every A-cut swimmer is seated. There's no cap on A cuts — if fifteen swimmers hit the standard in one event, all fifteen get in, and it's the B-cut pool that absorbs the squeeze.
Relays work differently than you'd expect. D2's published standards list a "Qualifying" column and a "Provisional" column for every relay — but Qualifying is marked N/A across the board. D2 relays only have one real cutline.
Division III
Same two-tier shape as D2, with three separate published formulas underneath:
- A cut: 3-year average of the top finisher's time in finals.
- B cut: 3-year average of the 32nd-place time from the meet entry system.
- Relay cut: 3-year average of the 20th-place time (men) or 24th-place time (women) from the entry system.
Those are three different ranks, not one formula reused. Selection fills the top 16 men / 20 women per individual event, adds top relay finishers, then fills remaining spots one swimmer at a time until the meet hits its cap (260 men, 319 women).
On "NS": occasionally you'll see an "NS" entry alongside A/B in a results database. It isn't an NCAA standard — there's no such designation in any division's official rules. Where it shows up, it's almost always a database placeholder (unpopulated row, "No Standard" for an event with no cutline), not a real qualifying tier.
A/B cuts vs. A-final/B-final
Two unrelated concepts that happen to share letters:
- A cut / B cut / QS — a season-long time standard that decides whether you're invited to the meet at all.
- A-final / B-final — the at-the-meet grouping after prelims, based on how you rank in that session. A swimmer who arrived on a B cut can still swim into the A-final if they're fast enough on the day.
D1 dropped B-finals for 2026, then brought them back for 2027 — a separate change from the QS overhaul happening the same year.
