Understanding the Rules of Starts in Swimming
-
Swimming is a sport that involves various events, and each event has its own set of rules. One of the most important aspects of any swimming event is the start. The start sets the tone for the rest of the race and can often make the difference between winning and losing. The rules of starts in swimming are designed to ensure fair and safe competition for all swimmers.
Here are the rules of starts in swimming:
Commencement of each heat
Before each heat begins, the Referee will use a brief sequence of whistles to signal the swimmers to remove all clothing except their swimwear. This will be followed by a long whistle indicating that they should assume their positions on the starting platform, the deck, or in the water. In backstroke and medley relay events, the swimmers must enter the water immediately upon hearing the Referee's first long whistle, and return to the starting position without undue delay upon hearing the second long whistle.Swimmers under the Starter's control
Once the swimmers and officials are prepared, the Referee will use an outstretched arm to signal to the Starter that the swimmers are now under their control.Taking the starting position
Upon hearing the Starter's command "take your mark," the swimmers must promptly take their starting position in the forward start, with at least one foot positioned at the front of the starting platform or deck. Swimmers starting in the water must keep at least one hand in contact with the wall or starting platform. The Starter will then initiate the start of the race once all swimmers are still and ready.Failure to take the starting position
In the event that a swimmer fails to respond promptly to the command "take your mark," the Starter will instruct all swimmers to stand up by issuing the command "stand up," allowing them to either stand up or step off the starting blocks.Enforcement of the correct starting position
If the race is allowed to continue, a swimmer will not be disqualified for assuming an improper starting position. It is the responsibility of the Starter to ensure that all swimmers are positioned correctly at the start. In summary, the rules of starts in swimming are essential to ensure fair play and safety for all swimmers. The Referee, Starter, and swimmers all have specific roles to play to ensure that the start of the race is executed correctly. Failure to adhere to these rules can result in disqualification.
