The IM is a swimming race where you have to swim four different ways: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. You have to swim each way for one-quarter of the race. So, if you swim a 100-meter IM, you swim 25 meters of each stroke.

When you swim, you have to follow some rules:

    • When you swim butterfly, you use both arms and kick your legs together up and down.
    • When you swim backstroke, you float on your back and use your arms and legs to move forward.
    • When you swim breaststroke, you use both arms and kick your legs together like a frog.
    • When you swim freestyle, you can swim any way you want, but when you turn at the end of the pool, you have to be on your stomach.

When you turn from one way to another way, you have to follow these rules:

    • When you turn from butterfly to backstroke, you touch the wall with both hands, then you can turn any way you want but your shoulders have to be towards your back when you leave the wall.
    • When you turn from backstroke to breaststroke, you touch the wall with one hand while on your back, then you can turn any way you want but your shoulders have to be towards your chest when you leave the wall.
    • When you turn from breaststroke to freestyle, you touch the wall with both hands, then you can turn any way you want but you have to be on your stomach before you start swimming freestyle again.
    • The race ends when you touch the wall at the end of the pool after swimming all four ways.
