How Are IMX Scores Calculated When a Swimmer Ages Up?

FAQ

  • Q: What happens if a swimmer ages up during the season?
A: IMX scores are calculated based on a single age within a single season (September 1 – August 31). However, swimmers often age up mid-season, which means their best times from the younger age might still be their fastest in the season.

To ensure fairness, if a swimmer ages up, we:

    • Carry over their best times from the younger age group, as long as they were the fastest times achieved that season.
    • Recalculate their Power Points using the new age group’s scoring table.

    Example:

    • A swimmer starts the season at age 11 and turns 12 in March.
    • Their best 200 IM time as an 11-year-old was in January (let’s say 2:30.00).
    • They swim the 200 IM again in May, but their time is slower (2:31.00).
    • Since we use the best times from the season, we keep 2:30.00 in their IMX score at age 12, but recalculate the Power Points for a 12-year-old.

This ensures swimmers’ best performances count, even if they age up mid-season.

Thank you, @ReedK27! SwimStandards.com was originally created for USA club swimming, where age is required to calculate powerpoints and time standards (e.g., A/B times). We know SwimCloud supports high school meets and college meets, but SwimCloud does not display swimmer ages, so we cannot directly import their data. @ReedK27 and @Marlene-Kilpatrick, thank you both for joining the discussion. High school meets use school year instead of age, and high school teams instead of club teams, which are not fully supported in our system. Additionally, high school dual meet results include scoring, which is also missing in our current system designed for USA club swimming. If a high school meet is run using Hy-Tek Meet Manager and we can obtain the meet results from the LSC’s observed meets, we are able to import them (although we do skip some swimmers who don’t have age information). To fully support high school meets, we are planning to set up a separate database, similar to what we’ve done for some summer league teams. The main barrier is getting the meet results, so we’ll contact high school associations like MHSAA and CHSAA to see if they’re willing to provide us with the data.
